GATE 2026 Exam Begins from February 7: Guidelines, Documents, Exam Timing

The examination will be conducted in two shifts on each exam day.

GATE 2026 Exam Timings


The exam will be held in the following shifts:

Morning Shift (Forenoon): 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Afternoon Shift: 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM

The exact shift timing for each candidate will be mentioned on the admit card. Candidates must follow the shift allotted to them.

GATE 2026 Exam Pattern and Mode


GATE 2026 will be conducted as a computer-based test. All questions will appear on the computer screen. Candidates must answer using the mouse and keyboard.

A virtual calculator will be available on the screen. Candidates are not allowed to carry any physical calculator inside the examination hall.

Reporting Time at Examination Centre


Candidates must reach the examination centre at least 60 to 90 minutes before the exam start time. Early reporting is required for document verification, biometric verification, security checks, and seating arrangements.

Late entry will not be allowed once the exam gate is closed. Candidates are advised to reach the centre well in advance to avoid stress.

Documents Required for GATE 2026 Exam


Candidates must carry the following documents on the exam day:

  • GATE 2026 Admit Card printed on A4 size paper with clear details
  • One original valid photo identity proof such as Aadhaar Card, Passport, Voter ID, Driving License, or PAN Card
  • Passport size photographs, if mentioned in the admit card instructions

The admit card is mandatory for entry into the examination hall. Photocopies of ID proof are not accepted.

Items Not Allowed Inside the Exam Hall


The following items are strictly prohibited inside the examination hall:

  • Mobile phones and electronic gadgets
  • Smartwatches and digital watches
  • Physical calculators
  • Bags, purses, and wallets
  • Books, notes, or study material
  • Bluetooth devices, earphones, cameras
  • Any written or printed material

Candidates are advised not to bring prohibited items as the exam centre may not provide storage facilities.

Facilities Provided at Exam Centre


The examination centre will provide rough sheets for calculations and rough work. Candidates must write their name and registration number on the sheets before use. These sheets must be returned after the exam and cannot be taken outside.
