The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2024 have released their results, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore now holds the 225th position globally, a decline from last year’s rank of 155. IISc has also been surpassed by IIT Bombay, losing its status as the top university in India.
According to the Education Ministry’s NIRF rankings, IISc Bangalore remains India’s best university and the second-best institution for higher education overall.
“The Indian Institute of Science (225th) experienced a lower rank in the reset methodology, partly due to the revised weightage assigned to its faculty-to-student ratio, which is one of its strengths. This edition assigns 50% less weight to this indicator. Additionally, the introduction of three new indicators serves as areas of development for this prestigious institution. India can now take pride in having two more entries in the world’s top 500 universities with the University of Delhi (ranked 407th) and Anna University (ranked 427th) making their debut in this tier,” stated QS in its official statement.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has now claimed the top spot in the country and stands at 149th globally, rising from its previous rank of 172.
IIT Delhi, however, has dropped to 197th this year, falling from its previous position of 174th. Nonetheless, IISc’s decline from first to third place has allowed IIT Delhi to secure the third spot within the country.
Three other IITs have made it onto the global top 300 list, although all of them have experienced drops in their rankings.
