Important Link PAN with Adhaar before 31 March | Check step-by-step guide; how to link

The Income Tax Department has made it mandatory to link the PAN card with Aadhaar. According to the government advisory, if the two identification cards are not linked before March 31, 2023, the PAN card will become inoperative. People will be restricted from filing the income-tax return or accessing PAN-related services.

“It is mandatory. Don’t delay, link it today! As per the I-T Act, it is mandatory for all PAN-holders who do not fall under the exempt category, to link their permanent account numbers (PAN) with Aadhaar before March 31, 2023. From April 1, 2023, the unlinked PAN shall become inoperative,” reads the public advisory issued by the I-T Department.

How to link PAN card with Aadhaar card

If your PAN and Aadhaar are not linked, you can link them via SMS or online.

1. Via SMS:

To link your PAN with your Aadhaar via SMS, send an SMS to either 567678 or 56161 using your registered phone number.

  • First, type a message in UIDPAN format i.e., UIDPAN (space) 12-digit Aadhaar number (space) 10-digit PAN number.
  • The SMS needs to be sent from your registered number only to either 567678 or 56161.
  • You will get a confirmation message regarding the Aadhaar and PAN card linking.

2. Via Online:

Link PAN with Aadhaar online by visiting the Income Tax portal

To link your PAN card with your Aadhaar card-

  • Go to the official websites of the Income Tax Department of India, eportal.incometax.gov.in or incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
  • Register your ID if not already done.
  • Login into the portal using your User ID, password and date of birth date. The user’s ID to log in will be your PAN (Permanent Account Number).
  • You will see a pop-up window prompting you to link your PAN with your Aadhaar.
  • To link go to ‘Profile Settings’ on the Menu bar and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ on the homepage.
  • Enter your PAN number, Aadhaar number, and your name as mentioned on your Aadhaar card.
  • Check the “I have only year of birth in Aadhaar card” box if applicable.
  • Enter the Captcha code displayed on the screen to verify.
  • Click on the “Link Aadhaar” button.
  • If the details entered by you match your PAN and Aadhaar records. If your details match click on the “link now” button. Your PAN card will be successfully linked with your Aadhaar card.
  • After a successful linking process, a pop-up message will inform you that your Aadhaar has been successfully linked to your PAN.

Note: In case the details in your Aadhaar card and PAN don’t match, you will have to get your Aadhaar details updated to match your PAN records.

How to check Aadhaar is linked with PAN card

Via Online:

Step 1: Visit the official UIDAI website (https://uidai.gov.in/).
Step 2: Click on “Aadhaar Services” and select “Aadhaar Linking Status.”
Step 3: Now, enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and click on “Get Status.”
Step 4: You will be asked to enter your PAN card number and the Captcha code for security verification.
Step 5: Click on “Get Linking Status” to get the status of your Aadhaar-PAN linking.
Step 6: The result will show if your Aadhaar and PAN card is linked or not.

Notably, you can also check the linking status of your Aadhaar and PAN card by visiting the NSDL e-Governance website (https://www.nsdl.com/).

Via SMS:

To check the status of PAN-Aadhaar linking through SMS. follow these steps.

Step 1: Compose a new SMS and type UIDPAN followed by a space.
Step 2: Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number after the space.
Step 3: Next, enter your 10-digit Permanent Account Number (PAN) after another space.
Your SMS will be –
UIDPAN < 12 digit Aadhaar number> < 10 digit Permanent Account Number>
Step 4: Send the SMS to either 567678 or 56161.
Step 5: Now, wait for a response from the service.
Step 6: If your PAN is linked with your Aadhaar, the message will say “Aadhaar…is already associated with PAN (number) in ITD database. Thank you for using our services.”
Step 7: If your PAN is not linked with your Aadhaar, the message will say “Aadhaar…is not associated with PAN (number) in ITD database.”
