Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced the Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Environmental Studies, scheduled to commence from the July 2023 session. The program aims to raise awareness about various environmental issues, according to IGNOU.
The university stated, “The current degradation of natural ecosystems is seen in the form of environmental pollution, climate change, resource depletion, biodiversity loss, etc. In order to address the environmental challenges induced by anthropogenic activities, there is a need to develop a knowledgeable workforce in areas such as climate change, pollution, waste management, sanitation, conservation of biological diversity, management of biological resources, forest and wildlife conservation, and sustainable development.”
Additionally, completing the PG Diploma program can serve as a pathway for lateral entry into the MA (Environmental Studies) program offered by the institute. IGNOU expects that graduates of the program will be capable of playing crucial roles in addressing environmental and sustainability concerns in India and worldwide. The program aims to equip learners with the skills to restore, protect, and sustain the environment, as well as appreciate the interdependence of its components.
