J&K: University professors to retire at 65 but with a condition

The J&K government has recently increased the retirement age of J&K Universities from 62 to 65 years. However, there is a condition attached to this enhancement specifically for university professors.

According to an official document, the decision to extend the retirement age of university professors, with certain conditions, has been made by the administrative Council under the leadership of J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

To evaluate the eligibility for retirement age extension, a committee headed by J&K Chief Secretary Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta has been formed. This committee will review each case individually and make decisions based on the specific circumstances.

The Higher Education Department (HED) has sent a communication to the Registrar of Jammu University to inform them about the government’s decision.

According to the government order, the performance of university professors will be assessed based on various parameters before they reach the age of 62.

The committee will evaluate the professor’s overall performance, physical and mental health suitability for teaching and research assignments in the university. The professor’s conduct, behavior, integrity, and adherence to the Civil Service Regulations of the J&K government will also be considered.

Teaching contributions will be evaluated based on student feedback and the adoption of new teaching approaches. The committee will also assess academic contributions, including the number of publications, books, chapters in books, participation in seminars, conferences, workshops, the development of new syllabi and courses, patents, consultancy assignments, and awards or fellowships received.

The professors will also be evaluated based on their research contributions, such as the number of research publications in reputed journals, the number of Ph.D. candidates they have enrolled and supervised, and their involvement in research projects and fellowships.

Additionally, the committee will consider the professors’ contribution to the institution, including their participation in university committees and overall contributions to the institution, when determining the extension of their retirement age.
